Toni Morrison was born Chloe Anthony Wofford in Lorain, Ohio. She did her undergraduate work in English at Howard University, where she began to be known as "Toni" (Dreifus). She then earned her master's in English from Cornell. She married in 1959 to Harold Morrison, and had two children: Slade, and Harold Ford. Toni Morrison divorced her husband in 1964. After her separation, she moved to New York and worked at Random House, editing textbooks. Morrison began to work on her first novel, "The Bluest Eye" and would wake each morning at 4 a.m to work on it (NY Mag)."The Bluest Eye", published in 1970, originally wasn't much of a success, until the City University of New York opened a Black Studies department and put the book on their list of required readings. Morrison says "required readings" are wear her success lies. in 1989, she began teaching at Princeton. She won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1993. (New York Times).
